How to Correctly Measure Garage Door Torsion Springs

Use this guide to identify your replacement torsion spring by markings, wire size, inside diameter, coil length, and wind direction before ordering.

Do Not Have an Existing Spring to Measure?

Use a spring recommendation or calculation process if you are installing springs on a new door, replacing a spring that may already be incorrect, or do not know the correct spring size. In these cases, do not guess from another door or order only by door width and height.

What You Need to Measure

To identify a replacement torsion spring correctly, you must confirm these four specifications. Before that, always check the old spring for existing size markings because that may speed up the process.

The most important measurement because it determines spring torque.

Measure the hollow center of the coil. Do not include the cones.

Measure relaxed coil length and confirm left-hand or right-hand wind.

Step 0: Check for Spring Markings First

The easiest way to identify your spring is to look for printed or written markings on the spring itself. If the spring has a clear marking, use it as a starting point and then confirm the other dimensions if needed.

If there are no markings, continue through the measurement steps below. Many torsion springs in the field have no readable size marks, faded paint, or markings that are no longer reliable.

Best practice: if you see a marking, take a clear photo of it before doing anything else. It can help confirm the replacement spring later.

Step 1: Find the Wire Size

Most important measurement

Why wire size matters

Wire size has a direct effect on spring torque and door balance. Even a small difference in wire size can produce the wrong lifting force and lead to an unsafe or poorly balanced door.

How to measure

Use 10 coils and 20 coils

Measure the length of 10 coils. Then measure 20 coils and confirm that both numbers point to the same wire size in the chart.

1. Choose a clean section

Measure where the coils are touching tightly with no gaps and where the spring is not damaged.

2. Measure 10 coils

Use a tape measure to capture the full length of exactly ten coils in decimal or fractional inches.

3. Measure 20 coils

Use the 20-coil measurement as a cross-check. If the 10-coil and 20-coil values do not align, measure again.

Caliper tip: If you have a mechanical or digital caliper, set it to decimal inches and measure the wire directly. The reading may vary slightly because of manufacturing tolerance, but it can help confirm the correct wire size. Use the 10-coil and 20-coil measurements as the primary reference.

Step 2: Measure the Inside Diameter (I.D.)

Measure across the hollow center of the spring from the side view. Do not include the stationary cone or winding cone.

Direct method

Measure the inside opening directly

Place the tape measure or caliper across the empty space in the center of the spring from inside edge to inside edge.

Math method

Use outside diameter if needed

I.D. = O.D. - (2 × wire size)

Example: 2.414" outside diameter - (0.207" × 2) ≈ 2.000" inside diameter.

Common residential sizes: 1 3/4" and 2" are the most common I.D. sizes on residential torsion springs. Some heavier or special applications may use 2 1/4", 2 5/8", 3 3/8", or 3 3/4".

Cone stamp tip: many stationary cones have stamped markings such as P200, P200S, or P2000 for a 2" I.D., and P175 for a 1 3/4" I.D.

Step 3: Measure the Spring Length

Measure only when the spring is fully unwound and relaxed A wound torsion spring can measure several inches longer than its true relaxed length.
If the spring is intact

Measure the coil body only

Measure the coil body from end to end. Do not include the stationary cone or winding cone in the measurement.

If the spring is broken

Add the coil sections together

Lay the broken pieces in a straight line, align them end-to-end, and add the coil-body lengths together to get the relaxed spring length.

Step 4: Confirm Wind Direction

Wind direction is listed as right-hand wound or left-hand wound. This is especially important on single-spring systems.

Single-spring systems

Always verify wind before ordering

If you order the wrong wind on a single-spring system, the spring will not function correctly.

Most two-spring systems

Standard left/right arrangement

Check cone color markings

Many winding cones use color marks that help identify wind direction, but always verify with the actual spring orientation.

Standard cone-color reference: black is commonly used to identify a left-wound spring, while red is commonly used to identify a right-wound spring. Treat this as a confirmation clue, not a substitute for verifying the actual spring orientation.
Non-standard setup: the left/right mounting rule applies to most garage doors with torsion springs mounted above the center of the door. If your setup looks different, contact us before ordering.

Why Accurate Measurements Matter

Door Balance

The wrong wire size or inside diameter can create too much or too little lifting force and can throw off the door balance.

Hardware Wear

An incorrectly balanced door can damage the opener, cables, drums, hinges, bearings, and other hardware over time.

Correct Length

Measuring a spring while it is wound can give the wrong length, which leads to incorrect spring selection.

Cycle Life

Most standard residential torsion springs are rated around 10,000 cycles. If your door sees heavy daily use, a higher-cycle spring may be a better choice.
