A new-spring calculation normally requires complete door data and hardware information rather than measurements from an old spring.

Do not loosen the set screws on the winding cone. A wound torsion spring can release force violently.
Keep your hands away from the cones, cables, and drums while the spring is under tension.

To identify a replacement torsion spring correctly, you must confirm these four specifications. Before that, always check the old spring for existing size markings because that may speed up the process.
Printed or stamped size markings may already identify the spring.
The most important measurement because it determines spring torque.
Measure the hollow center of the coil. Do not include the cones.
Measure relaxed coil length and confirm left-hand or right-hand wind.
The easiest way to identify your spring is to look for printed or written markings on the spring itself. If the spring has a clear marking, use it as a starting point and then confirm the other dimensions if needed.
If there are no markings, continue through the measurement steps below. Many torsion springs in the field have no readable size marks, faded paint, or markings that are no longer reliable.
Wire size has a direct effect on spring torque and door balance. Even a small difference in wire size can produce the wrong lifting force and lead to an unsafe or poorly balanced door.
Measure the length of 10 coils. Then measure 20 coils and confirm that both numbers point to the same wire size in the chart.
Measure where the coils are touching tightly with no gaps and where the spring is not damaged.
Use a tape measure to capture the full length of exactly ten coils in decimal or fractional inches.
Use the 20-coil measurement as a cross-check. If the 10-coil and 20-coil values do not align, measure again.

Measure across the hollow center of the spring from the side view. Do not include the stationary cone or winding cone.
Place the tape measure or caliper across the empty space in the center of the spring from inside edge to inside edge.
I.D. = O.D. - (2 × wire size)
Example: 2.414" outside diameter - (0.207" × 2) ≈ 2.000" inside diameter.
Measure the coil body from end to end. Do not include the stationary cone or winding cone in the measurement.
Lay the broken pieces in a straight line, align them end-to-end, and add the coil-body lengths together to get the relaxed spring length.
Wind direction is listed as right-hand wound or left-hand wound. This is especially important on single-spring systems.
If you order the wrong wind on a single-spring system, the spring will not function correctly.

Many winding cones use color marks that help identify wind direction, but always verify with the actual spring orientation.
The wrong wire size or inside diameter can create too much or too little lifting force and can throw off the door balance.
An incorrectly balanced door can damage the opener, cables, drums, hinges, bearings, and other hardware over time.
Measuring a spring while it is wound can give the wrong length, which leads to incorrect spring selection.
Most standard residential torsion springs are rated around 10,000 cycles. If your door sees heavy daily use, a higher-cycle spring may be a better choice.
